Why Cleethorpe Road isn't Cleethorpes Road - mystery over strange street name solved
Whether they are named in memory of a famous person, a historical landmark, or just happen to be a High Street, every road name has a reason and explanation.
One of the most curious street names in our area, however, is Cleethorpe Road, which notably lacks the ‘s’ from its name. But why is it Cleethorpe Road instead of Cleethorpes Road?
A quick search of the web provide no real answers, just that it joins the words Clee, an old word for clay, and thorpes, which is an Old English/Old Norse word for villages.
